About our Maine Conservation Champion Award recipient: Don Perkins is a co-founder of the Friends of Casco Bay and has been the CEO and president of the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) for twenty three years. GMRI’s research teams were the ones who did the analysis finding that the Gulf of Maine is warming faster than 99% of the global ocean; GMRI lives on the bleeding edge of climate change. GMRI’s community team is leading an urgent effort to accelerate shellfish and algae culture to diversify our climate-vulnerable lobster economy. Finally, the GMRI education team has the audacity to believe that GRMI can drive Maine’s emergence as a science/math literate state — a critical thinking state — over a 30 year horizon.
