New Leaf Farm

New Leaf Farm near Runaround Pond in Durham was one of the first organic commercial farms in Maine and was run and operated by Dave and Chris Colson until 2014. Today, the farm is not commercially farmed, yet with a conservation easement that will be placed on the land in 2023, there will be less of a barrier for a farmer from the next generation to steward the land and provide local food. Winterwood Farm

Winterwood Farm, which was established in the 1960s, has rich soil and sits on an aquifer that produces 90 percent of Freeport’s drinking water. The rolling green pastures hold a home, two barns, fenced-in areas for horses, and several large oak trees. For the most part, the space is wide open.  Freeport Conservation Trust holds an agricultural conservation easement on the farm, protecting it from being developed.

Maine’s Land for Maine’s Future program and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service awarded money for the conservation of Winterwood Farm. Maine Farmland Trust and Maine Water Company donated money towards the easement as well and the good sum of money was raised donated by individual donors.

Winterwood Farm is not open to the public, but is preserved as a forever farm and cannot be developed otherwise.
