Conserved: Town of Pownal Elmwood Woodlands

Royal River Conservation Trust is delighted to announce the establishment of a new conservation easement covering 90.6 acres of forested land and wetland in Pownal, Maine. Located on Elmwood Road, this Town of Pownal woodlot has served as a focal point for town timber harvesting for generations while its woods roads have become popular trails for outdoor enthusiasts.

One of the woodlot’s primary trails begins at Elmwood Road (where it connects with RRCT’s Elmwood Trails) and runs south where it crosses by bridge over Chandler Brook. The woodlot is contiguous with other protected lands, RRCT trail easements, powerline corridors with trail licenses held by the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands, and private permissions for snowmobile club trails. Together, these trails form a network of connectivity spanning the distance between Bradbury Mountain State Park and the Pineland Public Reserve Lands.

In order to provide access to both Elmwood Trails and this newly conserved parcel, RRCT built a trailhead parking lot at 819 Elmwood Road. No more having to park on the road shoulders of Elmwood Road!
